Convert esd to wim

The W10 ISO downloaded from the Microsoft site doesn’t have the .wim file needed to use MDT to re-image machines. A very easy way is to use DISM to extract the version of W10 you want (Home/Pro/Education) and convert it into a WIM file to be imported to MDT.

To start copy the install.esd from the /sources/ folder on the ISO to a working directory. Then open a Command Prompt window as admin.

CD over to your working directory and use the following command:

This will the show you all the windows versions that are present in the esd file.

Next, find the index of the version you want and substitute that for X in the code below.

DISM then exports the .wim to the same location as the .esd ready to import to MDT!
